The Concert Bands at Norton High School are the heart of the band program. Students prepare and perform many styles and levels of wind band repertoire. The Concert Bands perform periodically throughout the school year, as well as attending adjudicated events through the Ohio Music Education Association (OMEA).
The Norton Marching Band is one of the most vibrant and visible organizations at Norton High School. The band competes in the Ohio Music Education Association (OMEA) circuit, as well as the Bands of America (BOA) circuit, attending the Grand National Championships in Indianapolis each year. Additionally, Norton hosts its own OMEA show, Art in Motion, every year, bringing many local high school bands to campus to compete. The band also appears in various parades and other community events.
Participation in the marching band is open to all students in grades 9-12, and is contingent upon enrollment in a concert band.
The Jazz Band at Norton is a curricular ensemble that rehearses during the school day. The band plays a wide variety of music written for big band, ranging from swing to Latin to pop to funk. This ensemble is open to students in grades 9-12.
There are two components to the Color Guard program at Norton High School: the fall Color Guard and the Winter Guard.
The fall guard is a part of the Marching Band, adding an additional visual component to the band. Guard members perform choreographically with a variety of equipment including flags, sabres, and rifles, while providing a visual expression of the music. Participation in the fall Color Guard is open to all students who are entering grades 9-12.
The Winter Guard ensembles compete during the winter in the Ohio Indoor Performance Association (OIPA) circuit. There are both a Varsity and Junior Varsity ensemble to help serve the varying ability levels of members. Participation in these ensembles are open to students in grades 7-12.
Previous experience is not required to join the Color Guard! Clinics are held throughout the year where students are taught the basics.
While Norton Bands no longer sponsor a scholastic indoor percussion ensemble, we highly encourage students interested to participate in M3, an independent (not associated with Norton High School) percussion ensemble that rehearses at Norton during the week from November to April. The group performs in the Ohio Indoor Performance Association (OIPA) and Winter Guard International (WGI). More information can be found by visiting the Matrix Performing Arts website.
